How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening is a process that makes the colour of the teeth lighter and whiter through an oxidation process. We can get sparkling white teeth and a more beautiful smile thanks to teeth whitening. White teeth does not just improve our appearance - it gives us a better self image and affects how people percieve us. It may sound like magic - but its pure science.
Why do our teeth become discoloured?
Our teeth can be stained and discolored due to several factors. The use of tetracycline during tooth development can cause teeth to turn gray, yellow or brown. Excessive ingestion of fluoride during tooth calcification can also cause teeth to become discolored. Severe trauma can cause staining in non-vital teeth (this occurs when blood in the ruptured vessels in the pulp oxidizes within the tubules, causing the tooth to turn darker). However, the most common reasons for our teeth to become darker and stained are foods, beverages (such as red wine, coffee and tea) and smoking. Also, teeth become darker with age. The good news is that the teeth can become whiter through teeth whitening.
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth Whitening is actually a tooth bleaching process, which lightens stains and discolorations on the tooth enamel and dentin. The active ingredient in the tooth whitening gel is Carbamide Peroxide. It reacts with saliva in the mouth and penetrates the tooth enamel and dentin, changing and lightening the color of the stains and discolored dentin. The stains and dentin are turned whiter and whiter by the tooth bleaching process until the desired tooth whitening result is obtained.
